Ingredient
Ceramides
What holds water in. The reason a moisturiser works rather than just feels nice.
What it is
Lipids that make up a large part of the skin's outer barrier. Skin that is short of them loses water faster and reacts to things it used to tolerate. A ceramide moisturiser replaces what is missing rather than sitting on top as a seal.
Who it suits
Dry skin, reactive skin, and anyone using a retinoid or an acid. Also oily skin that has been over-washed — oily and barrier-damaged is a common combination here.
Strength and how to start
Not a percentage game. Look for ceramides alongside cholesterol and fatty acids — the three together are what research supports, and good formulas say so on the ingredient list.
Pairs with
Water in, then held there.
Before and after. This is what makes the first six weeks of a retinoid bearable.
Be careful with
Nothing
There is no routine a ceramide moisturiser does not fit into.
In Bangladesh
For most of the year here you want ceramides in a light gel-cream, not a thick balm — the same ingredient in the wrong texture is the reason people decide moisturiser 'breaks them out'. Save the heavier cream for December to February.
Common questions
Do I need ceramides if my skin is oily?
Often yes. Oil and barrier lipids are not the same thing, and skin that is stripped by frequent washing is short of the second while producing plenty of the first.
